Frequently Asked Questions

These are the frequently asked questions that I am asked in every email. It will be updated every time I get a repetitive enquiry. Please note that the views here are entirely my own and may or may not represent those of my teachers and instructors. I assume all responsibilities and my apologies for any errors.

-------------------------------------------------------

Where are you from? What race are you?

I am from Negara Brunei Darussalam (on Borneo island in the center of Southeast Asia). I'm a Malay (Melayu). To correct any assumptions made by miss-informed people in most parts of the world, Brunei is not a part of Indonesia, not a part of Malaysia, not a part of Philipines, not part of the middle-east. It is an Independant country with its own Ruler.

-------------------------------------------------------

Where are you currently based?

Currently I'm based in Cardiff, Wales in the United Kingdom.

-------------------------------------------------------

Are you willing to travel to other countries to teach a seminar, workshop, or other public instructions?

Yes, Under the
Visa Waiver Program, Bruneians do NOT need a VISA to travel to any country in the world; but for security reasons official invitation letters with contact details are a must.

-------------------------------------------------------

Why do you train with weapons?

The main reason why we train with weapons 1st is because we believe in the preservation of the arts and the culture, heritage and ethical principles of the southeast asian martial arts that have been passed down through generations. We are keeping an ancient tradition alive. Many fighting arts claim to have ancient roots whose history was born from the battle field or a country's revolution, I have yet to read in the history books people fighting wars and revolutions where both sides trying to kill each other bare handed. In ancient (and the present) times wars are fought primarily with weapons, only when soldiers loose their weapons do they resort to their empty hand techniques.

-------------------------------------------------------

Carrying any type of weapon on the streets in illegal. Can you still fight or defend yourself without a weapon? Nobody carries or fights with a machete, stick or knife in the streets?

Some would say "I'd rather have broken bones and be scared then go to jail for the rest of my life if caught by the police with a weapon", Yes that is true. I am not encouraging anyone to carry weapons. But rather than taking weapons training in a negative light, why not take it in like any other applied knowledge.

Like in engineering, the only way to find a solution to any problem is by understanding it. On the streets to defend against boxers you have to experience boxing, to understand grappling your have to train with grapplers, to overcome Muay Thai/Kickboxing you have to learn from experienced practitioners. Weapons training is no different, its training help us to understand the different types of weapon that could be used against you and you use against them, weather it be anything sharp or blunt impact objects.

By familiarizing yourself and repetitively training with weapons, you will be physcologically desensitized, not get culture shocked when someone takes out a real knife or a bat on the streets against you. If someone brings out a knife or a broken bottle, our body will not freeze or our mentality would not try to fight him bare handed but due to our training, unconsciously we will try to gain advantage against his weapon by picking anything around us as an improvised self defense tool and using it with a reasonable force with the desired impact. If you can defend yourself against knives and bats, punches and kick are the least of your worries.

Because our primary aim is preservation, the quote accepting "broken bones and be scared" is not an option. Fair enough injuries heal but we do not know the extent of our injuries if or when attacked on the streets, there are no referees to stop the fight. As a victim we might get paralized, blinded, permenently brain damaged or killed. We have to think of our family, our parents that took care of us or the wife and children that we love, who will take care of them. If we are injured to the extent that it permenently effects our future carriers and earnings would "broken bones and be scared" still be acceptable?

-------------------------------------------------------

Are the weapons an extension of your empty hand techniques?

No, We train with weapons 1st to attain spacial awareness using weapons of various lengths. We do not have a thousand katas or a million forms to accommodate every weapon, only 3 core principles or movement. When we train with any weapon, it should translate itself to empty hands techniques with some or little modifications depending on the situation or environment we are in. Once you understand the 3 core principles, its not a bout how many techniques you know, but the understanding of principles to apply it.

-------------------------------------------------------

Are you a sports or tournament oriented martial art?

Although our principles and strategies can be used in a tournament or sport circuit, we are not tournament or sport oriented. Its purely for survival. We do slug it out once in a while in training using padded weapons, but it is purely for the self discovery using the understanding of principles and strategies. As we are a blade art, we avoid the attitude of trading blows, we aim to control and dominate the confrontation as soon as possible.

-------------------------------------------------------

Your art is not Silat, its FMA.. its Russian, its Kung fu, its Israeli, its Mongolian, etc... Its a copy of this, an imitation of that, etc.

Should I change my movements just to be different? Should I change it because so and so is using it? Its an honor to be associated and compared to some of the best fighting arts and instructors in the world, but some people just pick one or two techniques from my movements and base it on what is visually familiar to them and categorize the art to what it should be. What is one or two techniques compared to it as a whole? Should I judge you or your art on just a mere glance? I do not refuse that the movements that I do are similar to this or that, we have two hands and two feet, there is only so much that we can do with them, their movements are bound to look the same. A punch is a punch and a kick is a kick no matter what language they are spoken in.

-------------------------------------------------------

Do you represent Bruneian Martial Arts? Are you a leading authority in Bruneian Silat?

No, I do not represent Bruneian Martial Arts or Bruneian Silat in general. I am merely teaching and spreading in my own way "one of the many" colorful cultures and traditions found in Brunei, to make Brunei better known. There are other better martial artist, known and unknown silat styles and martial art systems found in Brunei. Try viewing Silat like football (soccer), every one in the world plays it with the same rules; one ball, one goal, but every nation plays it differently, the Brazilians plays it differently then the English, the French plays it differently from the Americans, even in the United Kingdom alone, different football clubs play the game differently, with different divisions.Silat is so diverse, therefore, it would be incorrect for an individual as myself or anyone to claim sole authority on such a broad spectrum.

-------------------------------------------------------

Is your art open to all?

The art is open to be taught and practiced by everyone who has the sincere desire to learn it with dedication and positive motivations and goal. It will be taught openly regardless of race, color, religion, physical abilities, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------

Is it open to other martial artist to cross train in?

All martial arts and fighting arts are welcome, no politics, regardless of style, system, rank or seniority. It is a chance to incorporate weapons training to their arsenal or just experience what we have to offer. I do not slander other arts or scare my students from taking other silat styles or martial arts. If I do that, it means i have doubts with the effectiveness of my art. Only you can judge if its right for you.

-------------------------------------------------------

Do you have any training restrictions?

Due to the nature of the silat we teach, public training is for aged 18 years old and above only. We do not teach children in public sessions due to various reasons. Personal hygiene is also our main concern, because we train to interact with people, cleanliness is best kept at the top of your list. No one wants to train with someone that smells.

-------------------------------------------------------

Will you just welcome anyone?

Due to moral and ethical reasons the instructor has the right to refuse any individuals with anti-social behaviour and negative motivation. We only welcome friendly people, if you are one of them, the door is always open.

-------------------------------------------------------

Do you contribute or join any forum or discussion boards?

I have registered to a few forums on invitation... (read more)

How to study Silat Suffian Bela Diri

Please Read This Before Proceeding

There is NO fast track instructor diploma program, we DO NOT sell instructor diplomas or blackbelt certificates even if you continuously attended a few weekend seminars / private sessions / group studies.

There are NO long distance correspondance program, NO learning through instuctional videos, NO video gradings.

I do NOT sell instructional DVDs.

I am NOT desperate to have representatives in every part of the world. Those who dedidcate parts of thier lives to SSBD understand my visions and aims in spreading SSBD. The passion is what spreads the art.

I and all SSBD group leaders firmly believe you cannot learn and instill "REAL" skill and understanding over just a few session or a few seminars. You may "remember" 100 movements, you may "copy" 1000 techniques, but this is not how authentic silat is learned and developed. It should be in your body, not in your brain.

We aim for quality practitioners that could teach the art with full understanding, not instructors who got thier diploma from "remembering" techniques for thier gradings.

Like any reputable learning institution, SSBD is instructed how it is supposed to be taught, not bought. Like a lecturer in a University, I provide a service, when was the last time you heard, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard or The MIT offering a fast track course to an Engineering Degree through a video? Think about it.

Once you understand this, you are welcome to proceed on how you can further your studies in SSBD below.

We are not the best, but you can rest assure we give our best.

HOW TO STUDY SSBD

+ Private Lessons

minimum 2 individual, Maximum 4

Personal instruction is the preferred method of study. The training method is based on your personal ability and is catered to suit your needs rather than the general outline presented in a public class. You will learn the correct training methods and mind-set. You will be more informed of the art that you are learning through direct and personal tuition from Maul Mornie. Private instruction lets you enjoy SSBD at your convenience. You will learn more in one private instruction than what you could acquire in 3 public sessions.

+ Join a Training Group

You can join one of the training groups listed in this website. These group of individuals will represent and carry the name of SSBD on completion of their training. They regularly train together and invites Maul Mornie in a closed door session for up-dates and intensive training once every few months. Training groups are instructed the core of SSBD and are trained traditionally as how Maul Mornie was trained. Those attending the training group are advised to participate in all seminars and workshop to their convenience. Group leaders reserve the right to refuse entry.

+ Start your own Training Group

You need a minimum group of 16 people (maximum 20). Willing to train regularly together and invite Maul Mornie once every few months for updates and intensive training. There are no long distance DVD instructions or long distance grading programs. All instructions are transmitted directly from the instructor in person. This is the only way authentic and effective SSBD methods should be instructed. Martial arts schools or clubs prefer this method to incorporate SSBD methods to their curriculum. Anyone with no experience are also welcome to do so.

+ Attend Seminars and Workshops

SSBD Seminars/workshops are hosted through out the year worldwide by martial arts schools and private groups. You can check out future events on the Seminar / Events link on this website. This is one way to learn and incorporate SSBD into your repertoire. Travelling to another country or state to train with a few guys for a day or two is not unusual, when necessary, plane fares are inexpensive these days; for example in Europe, http://www.ryanair.com/ and http://www.easyjet.com/; in Asia, http://www.airasia.com/

+ Host a Seminar / Workshop

Hosting a seminar is one other excellent way to learn SSBD and the expenses are paid through the the attendance of seminar participants. Seminars can be held in garages, backyards, parks, martial arts schools or a hired gym, etc. It is also a good way to set up a training group if you are interested. Using a seminar as a stepping stone to attract other interested individuals by using the event as a tester without any initial commitments.

There is special introductory price for hosting an SSBD seminar for the 1st time.

Please contact me at maul565@hotmail.com for more details. Due to my tight schedule, please be patient with my replies.

Training Overview

If the principles of tactics and strategies found in SSBD is understood thoroughly, it can be incorporated into any competitive sport, but due to its nature of dominate and destroy, the primary aim is for the protection of personal self and loved ones.
.
Our goal in training is not to prepare for fitness, one-on-one fights or competitions but to prepare ourselves with the awareness, knowledge and confidence to defend ourselves and our loved ones effectively and efficiently in any unwanted situations.
.
Silat Suffian Bela Diri encompasses the old blade tactics and strategies of the malay warriors of Borneo and Silat influences of the surrounding countries.
.
Initial training is done with weapons first, this is to install correct body-mechanics, coordination, distance awareness and mentality in engagement. The movements taught rely deeply on muscle memory and not brain memory; the body has to move as natural as possible without stress or strain to the muscles involved. This mentality and coordination cannot be achieved in a short amount of time and for this reason, correct, direct and detailed instructions is necessary.
.
.

BLADE MENTALITY
.
SSBD is based heavily in blade oriented mentality, Silat Suffian Bela Diri covers 3 classifications of weapons, which could transition itself into empty hands techniques with little or no modification depending on the situation and environment. Each weapon can be used singular or in pairs held one in each hand.
.
Edged Weapons
.
Includes the use of pedang (sword), parang (machete), kapak (axe), pisau (knife), kerambit (claw shaped blade), etc.
.
Impact Weapon
.
Utilizes the tungkat (cane/staff), tambong (short stick), buku lima (knuckle duster), chinchin (finger rings), etc.
.
Flexible weapons
.
Includes tali (rope), rantai (chain), kain sarong (looped cloth), selindang (long scarf), sesandang (shoulder scarf), etc.
.
The Unarmed Methods
.
Employs pukulan (Kuntau - nerve and structural strikes), Ganggam (pain point constriction), Kunchian (joint manipulation), Ground Fighting (Harimau, Buaya, etc) and Bergalut (to wrestle) which inlcudes chokes, trappling, throws, sweeps, etc.
.
.

MUTUAL BENEFIT
.
Training is mainly done mainly in pairs for mutual benefits of training for both parties to obtain a kind of confrontation experience in a controlled environment. Only through a living and conscious training partner can you see the feedback of your movements. Different people of different attributes; i.e. height, weight, pain thresh-hold, etc, contributes to a different understanding of the principles behind the skills learned.
.
It is not about who is physically faster or stronger, because physical attributes declines as you grow old.
.
.
NOT ABOUT SPEED OR STRENGTH
.
Unlike other general silat styles or martial art systems, SSBD do not condition thier practitioners for speed or strength, our speed comes from timing, the understanding of body mechanics and our strength comes from correct strategic positioning and solid-mobile foundation.
.
Training them aims to develop the correct reflexive response against attacks regardless of age, weather you are 20 or 90 years old, our training aims for your movements to be consistant as you grow older, without the risk of injury.
.
Its primary goal is to understand the principles behind every movements and training it repetitively to instill muscle memory rather than memorizing them. Its not about the quantity of techniques you can remember in your head, but the quality of understanding of the principles of strategy.
.
.
FOOTWORK
.
Finally footwork, is at the heart of the SSBD. Understanding that getting out of the path of attack and placing yourself at the most advantageous position will secure your victory in any type of confrontation.
.
Footwork in Silat Suffian Bela Diri could be trained simultaneously with the upper body or in isolation on its own.

Origins of Bruneian Martial Culture

Bruneian martial arts is not well known. Everyone has their own general visualization in their minds on how silat movements tends to be represented. But not many understands that silat is only a general term to cover the actual fighting methods and that there are thousands of styles with subtle differences. People tend to categorize what silat is, what it should be and how it should be trained; anything outside of this or the instructors personal criteria is anything but silat, disregarding that every country in southeast Asia has its own history and culture.

One of the Oldest Kingdom

Brunei is one of the oldest kingdom in southeast Asia, founded before the coming of Islam whose name originated from "Varuna" a Hindu Sanskrit text, the oldest text in the word, referring to its "nation of seafarers and traders".

Historical findings suggest that the Brunei kingdom began more than 1,500 years ago, pre-dating Islam. Founded by Pateh (or Patih) Berbai and a group of 90 warriors from the Sakai Tribe.

It existed side by side during the reign of the Srivijaya Empire of Sumatra in the 9th centrury, the Madjapahit Empire in Java in the 13th century and Parameswara in Malacca in the 15th century. Its earliest existence was believed to be a tributary province of the Srivijayan then the Majapahit Empire.

Ancient Chinese texts referred Brunei as either "Pu-ni", "Po-ni", "Pu-li", "Bun-lai" or "Wen-lai" and documented its interactions with the Chinese Empire in the years 518, 523, 616, 669, 977, 1279, and 1369-1643 AD. Ancient Indian traders called Brunei "Sailendra", "Syailendra" or "Syaleindra"; while the arabs called it "Kamrun", "Sribuza", "Dzabaj" or "Randj".

"Borneo" has only recently been used as pronounced by Europeans based on the statement by John H. Moor in 1871.

In another writing in 1812 by J.Hunt, he says "Borneo was the name only of a city, the capital of the three distinct kingdoms in the island,... The natives pronounce Borneo as Bruni and say its derived from the word "Brani" (Bruneian dialect for "Berani" in Bahasa Melayu) meaning courageous..."

Imperial Chinese texts also indicated that Muslim influence was established in Brunei in 977 AD, and slowly implemented the employment of Arabic characters in Brunei's written language, but before that, Sanskrit was used long before 1370.

The early kings of Brunei were called "Sang Aji", or "Reverend Monarch", a title of Sanskrit origin. The Brunei ruling dynasty changed in 1371 when Awang Alak Betatar, a heroic warrior King from a powerful kingdom in western Borneo, married a princess from a neighbouring kingdom and ascended the Brunei throne after gaining freedom from the Madjapahit Empire, took charge of their own territorial responsibility. He became the first Brunei ruler and the present ruler is his descendant.

Awang Alak Betatar was the first Brunei Raja to accept Islam, changing his title and name to Sultan Muhammad Shah (1371-1402) in honour of the Prophet.

1st Contact with Europeans

Brunei’s sovereignty peaked in the 15th and 16th centuries, when it controlled the whole of Borneo and parts of the Philippines. The kingdom’s vast wealth, derived from international commerce, created a strong impression on early European explorers. They returned to Europe with stories of gold, regalia and majestic ceremonies.

The 1st European to visit Brunei were the crew of Ferdinand Magellan's Spanish - backed expedition in 1521, during this time Magellan himself had been slain on the island of Cebu in the Phillipines but his flagship, the Victoria, reached Brunei in 1521. The chronicler of the voyage, Antonio Pigafetta, an Italian from Vicenza, was greatly impressed with what he saw. The Victoria anchored at Muara (a place that still exists today). Pigafetta recorded the splendour of the Sultan's court (gold, pearls the size of hens' eggs, etc), he mentions they were transported on tamed elephants and infront of the Sultans palace, a large brick wall with towers in which mounted 56 bronze and 6 iron cannons, more than 5 times the armament of Magellan's ships, and Brunei exported cloves (an aromatic dried flower buds of a specific tree used as a spice in cuisine all over the world), which were to prove more valuable than gold, upon the return to Spain. Pigafetta mentions some of the technology of the court, such as porcelain and eyeglasses (both of which were not available or only just becoming available in Europe).

Advanced Technology

Keeping in mind Megallan's crew was the 1st contact Brunei had with Europeans, the technology Brunei had were parallel if not encompassing them. Brunei was trading with one of the most advanced trading cultures of that time, China, India, Egypt, etc.

No malay nation in southeast asia during that time can claim the fire-arm as being one of thier tradtional weapons other then Brunei. Brunei Cannons known as bedil, as mentioned by Pigafetta are used not just on land but also on board Brunei warships. A record of the Spanish attacks on Brunei stated that the Brunei ships used cannons.

The origin of the cannons is unknown, they were already being manufactured in Brunei at least 500 or 600 years ago. Many cannon moulds have been found at archaeological sites throughout the country. The first cannon in Europe probably appeared during the Islamic era in Spain. Brunei cannons are more influenced by our relationship with the Chinese Empire. But like all knowledge from past empires, the knowledge of metal was lost and only a name is left, Kampung Pandai Besi (Village with the knowledge of metal).

Cannons played important roles in Brunei’s history. They were used as Brunei’s main defences and a good number were positioned at the mouth of the Brunei River and were placed there until the British came to Brunei in 1846.

Some famous cannons bore names, such as Si Tunggal (lit. translation; The One) and Si Dewa (lit. tanslation; The God). These two were taken by the Suluks during the Brunei civil wars and were later taken to Manila. Another well-known cannon during Sultan Bolkiah’s reign was Si Gantar Alam (lit. translation; That which could Shaker of the World) which was used during the attacks on Luzon and Manila. The names of the cannons alone shows the scale of power it must hold in its time. More on Bruneian Cannons
HERE.

During that time, he art of casting metals had been in existence for many centuries in Brunei. As far back as 1225, a visiting Chinese official, Chau Ju Kua, found that the Bruneians had been carrying swords and metal armour made of bronze when attending funerals. It was said that during the era of Sultan Bolkiah, the fifth Sultan, 40 Javanese metal craft experts had been brought back to teach Bruneians their craft.

War against other nations

As the first Islamic kingdom in the area Brunei was the base for the Islamization of the southern Philippines and surrounding areas, frequently coming into conflict with Catholic Spain after the Spanish conquest of Luzon, the central island of the Philippines. In 1578 in the conflict known as the Castille War (Perang Kastila) Spain attacked part of the Brunei Kingdom but was defeated by 100 fierce warriors, together with other locals who were loyal to the Sultan, lead by warriors of royal blood, Pengiran Bendahara Sakam with Orang Kaya Harimau Padang. Spain continued to try to conquer the Islamic Sultanate of Sulu in the southern Philippine islands, finally succeeding in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

The Kampilan and Kelasak one of the weapons in the Royal Regalia, seen here held by the Panglima Askar (lit. translation - Warrior Soldier) on the right of the picture.

Bruneian martial arts culture was used effectively within the major history of Brunei, seen perfectly preserved to present day in the Royal Regalia of Brunei's ancient rulers even before the 7th century, to the Castille War (Perang kastila) where the Spanish was defeated in 1578, to the World War against the Japanese.

Brunei has strived and continued to exist peacefully due to the efforts of His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah and Yang Di Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam; the longest line of reigning rulers that exist in the world today with perfect preservation of centuries of royal heritage.

Details of the Kampilan and Kelasak one of the weapons in the Royal Regalia, symbol of perfection of Brunei's Monarch's rich customs and tradition used since its 1st rulers to the present day

The Legend of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)
.
There is a legend passed from word of mouth in the Filipino Martial Art Community especially from old master that the Filipino Martial Arts originated from the 10 Datus that came from the kingdom of Bornay.

Basically legend had it, Islam came to Mindanao between the years 1240 A.D. and 1380 A.D., spreading to the Visayas and Luzon. It is during these years "Malays" ventured from the kingdom of Bornay (Brunei/Borneo) led by the ten datus (chieftains), the most important of whom is Datu Puti. Datu Puti traveled from Borneo to Panay, from Panay to Luzon, and from Luzon back to Borneo, after helping the datus to settle other islands. In 1433 A.D., Datu Kalantiyaw, the third chief of Panay and descendent of Datu Sumakwel from Borneo, issued civil and social orders called the Kalantiyaw for guiding his people. Although its authenticity is questionable, the eighteen commandments of the Kalantiyaw code may be one of the few written records surviving the pre-Spanish times in the Philippines.

It was during reign of the ten Datus (also spelled as Dato, meaning high officials or chieftains) from Borneo the bladed arts Kali or Silat (depending on the tribe dialects) was brought to the Philippines, the forerunner of Arnis in the North, Escrima in its Central and Kali/Silat in the South; was initially taught to the school of Bothoan in the Island of Panay along with academic subjects and agricultural knowledge.

The sword used by Lapu Lapu to kill Ferdinand Megallen, descendant of the Datus from Borneo, is the kampilan, kampilan is not used by any other tribes in Borneo other than that preserved in Brunei's Royal Regalia.

Something to think about.

Testimonials from World Class Masters

Apart from the hundreds of positive feedbacks from the public and seminar attendees, SSBD has also received words of support from known and high ranked martial arts masters and instructors internationally, whom personally I would love to meet and train under.

Through friendship and mutual respect, I have also written their experience, background and links to their websites.

The martial arts community has no place for egos and closed minded people who think they have the best "reality" technique.

I have traveled the world, met and worked with many martial practitioners and professionals who lay their life on the line everyday, and all I can say is that they have nothing to prove to anyone.

Below are some of the positive feedbacks given by world class instructors and weapon masters. The feedbacks are not arranged in any specific order except that all latest feedbacks are at the bottom of the page.

I would like to sincerely thank each an every one of them for their time in doing so. It is truely my honor.

"..your Silat system of unarmed defence against a knife is simple, very fast and effective. Sensei John Haitidis (7th Dan Shotokan Karate) and Renshi Shihan Greg Rees (5th Dan WGKA Karate Academy) expressed this view. "Just want to let you know that we enjoyed your training.
We are impressed by the way you play, the no-nonsense attitude towards a conflict and the humorous way you teach. Next time you are in Holland let us know. You and your staff are very welcome to come and train in our facility.
We will exchange best-practices in a learning and friendly atmosphere. You will meet people with an equal open-minded mentality. Moreover, you will experience the same generosity and hospitality we all enjoyed whenever we came over to the home of our beloved Pa and Ma Flohr. Greetings from Holland.

"Dear Guru, My name is Suzanne Luna Spezzano. I have been studying Silat under my teacher Guro Dan Inosanto since 1997. I am currently an instructor in his system of madjapahit silat. My husband John Spezzano teaches martial arts full time and we are always thirsty for knowledge. Our teacher always encourages his students to train with many teachers and to "fill the well". We are very lucky to have him as our mentor. I just spent the last hour looking at your youtube clips and I was compelled to email you and tell you how strong and beautiful the movement is... My husband teaches abroad twice a year and we are going to have to work our schedules around coming and experiencing learning from you. It would be such an honor. I am rarely moved to reach out in this way, but when something catches your eye and you see beauty and efficiency, balance, strength, fluidity, economy of motion and grace... I had no choice but to reach out. I hope I get to meet you very very soon and as you say in your website, I certainly won't be the best - but when I train, I give my teacher my all, I give my teacher my best. Thank you for your time, Respectfully, Suzanne"

"Silat Suffian is one of the best self defense tactics that I've ever attend and it is a perfect combination of martial arts. It is suitable for all generations and very useful to me as an enforcement officer and also useful for my family, even if they know a little technique from it."

(parts from original messege)
"The blessings in my sky had been that I was for many years exposed to various forms of pentjac silat, and as I practise some styles - but mostly my forte was always in the Hakka kun tao. Your arts of silat, coming from your kraton are also amazing systems - the sultanate of Brunei had a great history behind.

Very fortunate for me, in my life, most of the folks, where-ever they came from and had studied with me - were all fenominum people and great practitioners. the feelings and respect was always mutual. However it is never easy to be a leader, and humanisticly speaking at times I too, like some other teachers, had some obstacles to overcome with students that never train as hard as others - and seems to think of martial advancement as an overnight virtue. Your art is great and I like the sambuts and potongs in your art!

I would be delightful of meeting you someday, have a selamatan and good coffee tubruk together... I wish you the very best, as the honor is mine as well, with respect Bapak Willem de Thouars.

SINCERE APOLOGIES

I would like to convey my sincere apologies for the individuals and groups of people who has sent me emails of enquiries, emails of support and encouragement.

As I am managing a major part of SSBD worldwide, in regards to the amount of emails that I get every week, I get an average of 55 to 60 emails a week. Due to my constantly travelling around the world, I would like to kindly ask for your understanding and patience if I do not or am late to reply to your emails.

To help get your answers faster, if you have any enquiries about SSBD seminars, study groups or trainin groups in your country or close to your area, please email the independent organizers or group leaders close to your country or area. They will help accomodate your enquiries. But please also be patient as most of them are not full-time martial artists, they have other responsibilities as well.

Thank you for taking your time to read this.

All the best in your training.

MAKLUMAN

Yang Benar;
Maul Mornie
